When I was a second year student in high school, I joined a Speech Contest in Kumamoto. In those days I was interested in English and foreign countries. And I joined it on the suggestion of high school teacher. I memorized all sentences, and practice very hard with many teachers and friends. This speech contest was very good experience for me. It was difficult for me to speak in society but I overcame. This is a content of speech contest.
A yearning for different cultures
I am a second year student in high school and it's time to think about my prospective occupation. I love English and I'd like to communicate with people from foreign countries. I came to like English when I was an elementary school child. We occasionally had English conversation classes in our school. The English class was full of fantastic activities such as fun games, merry songs and active conversations. I remember looking forward to the class every week. After that, I began to borrow some English books from the library and enjoyed reading English. I even wrote some unknown words in my notebooks and and tried to memorize them.
When I was a junior high school student, I had an English class everyday. The class with an ALT was the happiest time for me. I talked with the ALT not only during the class but also during lunch time, break time and after school. On holidays, I exchanged e-mails with her. She was so kind that she returned the e-mail in easier English as soon as he got it. One day, the ALT invited some students, including me, to her house and we had a fun English party. She cooked delicious food, cakes an snacks eaten in her hometown in Canada. She showed us many photos about her family, friends, the beautiful Canadian scenery, and told us about her wonderful hometown. I was very surprised and interested in the difference between Canadian and Japanese culture. At the same time, I felt that she was very proud o her country. My yearning to learn about foreign countries became greater as I spent more time with her.
I haven't been abroad, but I'd like to go some day. Many countries enchant me, but the most attractive country to me is Australia. Would you like to know the reason why I chose Australia but not Canada? Because my parents went on honeymoon to Australia! My parents often talk about their trip to Australia---How cute the koalas are, how strong the kangaroo boxer is, how clear the sea is, how horrible the vegemite is, how friendly the Aussie people are, and how yummy the Aussie beef is... Above all Aussie English is so unique. They talk about their memories in Australia with their newlywed romance over and over again and again! I found out that their happy and romantic trip to Australia brought them a visit from the stork, ME! Wow! Fantastic!
My dream in the future is to get a job using English. To be a bridge between countries, I think there are two things we need. First, I must have proper knowledge about my own country. If you want to let the other people know about your country, you should know as much as possible about your country's history, geography, culture, languages and customs. Your vague or false information may cause some misunderstandings with other people about your culture. Second, I feel we should have an open mind to understand and accept other cultures. Eliminating different culture from your world may create discrimination towards those cultures, from your world. However, accepting them enables you to expand your views of the world.
To communicate with other people, language are important tools especially English, which is spoken all over the world. Speaking English has the highest likelihood that will allow me to communicate with the most amount of people. In other words, English is one of the keys to opening other cultures. English provides more access to the world. My encounter with the ALT changed the direction of my life. Thank you, Holly! In the future, I'd like to contribute to the whole world through conversation just like her.
